The Bell Tower in Faaborg

In the centre of Faaborg, a bell tower remains from the town's first church, Skt. Nikolaj church. When the church, built around 1250, was demolished after the Reformation in 1536, the bell tower was left standing. It was built somewhat later than the church and therefore hardly required any maintenance. It also served as a sea mark for sailors.

Today, the bell tower still serves as the bell tower for Faaborg's parish church, Helligåndskirken, which replaced Skt. Nikolaj Church as the parish church when it was demolished.

A visit to the bell tower offers the opportunity to see the medieval building's amazing structures up close, with vaulted ceilings and large oak structures that lift the tower to a height of 31 metres. If you take the trip to the top of the tower, you'll be rewarded with the opportunity for a fantastic view of Faaborg and the archipelago.

The carillon with 38 bells was donated in 1960 by wine consultant Andersen, Odense. The bells were cast in Holland. The first mechanics worked according to a kind of music box principle.

Today, the chimes play 4 times a day with modern digital technology.
