Fjordmino - the Horsens Fjord trail
One of Denmark’s most beautiful fjords offers inviting varied nature, great experiences and good conditions for hikers. This waymarked hiking route takes you all the way around Horsens Fjord with a little help from a couple of ferries and islands. Put on your hiking boots and explore islands, forest, fields, meadow, beach, marinas, and villages on this 57-kilometre-long route.
Horsens Fjord is an abundance of nature experiences…
… and the new hiking route, the Fjordmino, makes it easy for you to experience them on foot. The winding and twisting coastline at the fjord offers many different types of nature and great variation. Here, you can experience all the best that the nature of Eastern Jutland has to offer – all within walking distance.
The route follows the coast both on the north- and southside of the inlet, combined with an element of island hopping on Alrø and Hjarnø. Do the whole route in one go, over a couple of days or choose a part of the route that suits you. There are great opportunities for a round trip focusing on a part of the route. The Fjordmino is a new route whichis still being developed. But already now, the majority of the route is waymarked.
Go island hopping on the fjord
Can you walk around a fjord? The natural characteristic of a fjord implies that this is not possible. But with a little help from two charming islands in the fjord and a couple of ferries you can cross the fjord. The island Alrø is connected to the mainland via a dam on the northside of the fjord. In the other end of Alrø, you can get on the little bicycle ferry thas sails to the neighbor island Hjarnø in the summer half-year. And from there you can switch to the Hjarnø Ferry and sail to Snaptun on the southside of the fjord.
Alrø is a cosy and charming island known for its great eateries. There are three of them on the island. Møllegården, located in a former pig house, Café Alrø with their giant patty shells of nationwide fame, and Alrø Købmandsgård where you can taste delicious bison meat at a bison farm.
The official route only has a short pitstop on the harbour on Hjarnø, where you switch to the Hjarnø Ferry, but we recommend that you go for a walk around the island and experience the unique island atmosphere and rich nature. The Hjarnø Ferry sails 30 times a day. Just go to the ferry when you are ready – it is up to you which departure you choose.
NB: The bicycle ferry only sails between March and October. See the timetable on this page before booking accommodation.
The northside of the fjord
The city of Horsens is located at the end of the fjord with its brand-new inviting harbour environment. You will pass the marina, the city beach Langelinie which is always packed with people when the weather is good, and Langelinie’s less known cousin, Strandparken. In the Stensballe neighborhood you will walk on a picturesque panorama path with fjord view until you reach the Blue Flag certified Husodde Beach. From here you drive through the Stensballe forests, and further east through hilly farmland with a great view most of the way.
In the area around Sondrup, the landscape becomes quite hilly, and at Sondrup Hills, you will pass through one of the most beautiful forests in the region.
The entire northside of the route from Horsens to Alrø is waymarked.
The southside of the fjord
From the marina and ferry port in Snaptun, you will now head to the village of Glud. In Glud you can visit Glud Museum which is an open-air museum where you can experience 350 years of agricultural village history. The agricultural theme is also very evident at Denmark’s Ferguson Museum located only a couple of kilometres away.
From Glud, the route is not waymarked. You can choose to follow the mainroad towards Horsens and turn right in Boller when you see the signs leading towards Boller Castle.
Alternatively, you can head north towards the interesting peninsula Borre Knob and follow the coast at the water’s edge. There is no path, but it is possible to walk there when the tide is not high. At the coast you will eventually get to Boller Forest where you will once again meet the route.
Make sure to visit the historic castle gardens at Boller Castle before heading on towards Horsens. The last kilometres towards Horsens, you walk on the Planet Path. At the start of the Planet Path in Boller, you can walk to the tip of Boller Pier which offers an excellent view of the city of Horsens.
