Shelters in Tønballe Forest

In the beautiful Tønballe Forest near Snaptun, there is a shelter site with three shelters. Here, you can stay overnight for free in the open air, surrounded by nature close to popular hiking trails.

Nice shelter site in the forest

Tønballe Forest is beautifully located on the outskirts of the ferry town Snaptun. The forest extends right down to the coast at Hjarnø Sound, near the entrance to Horsens Fjord. A bit inland, sheltered from the coast, lies a shelter site with three well-maintained shelters where you can stay overnight for free. The site has a fire pit with a grill, but no other facilities. It is permitted to collect firewood from the forest floor. You may want to bring your own if you want to ensure dry firewood.

The site is intended solely for overnight stays in shelters, and setting up tents is not allowed. You are welcome to seek shelter at the site and take a break during the day if it's not occupied.

Booking

Booking the shelters is reserved for larger groups, associations, and similar. If the shelters are not occupied, you are welcome to stay overnight.

Each shelter accommodates 6-8 people. It is not allowed to refuse others if there is room for more in the shelter. Otherwise, it's on a first-come, first-served basis.

About Tønballe Forest

In addition to the shelter site, Tønballe Forest offers a nice dog park and a beautiful observation tower with views over Hjarnø. The forest is home to several old defense fortifications, and on a hilltop, two cannons stand as a reference to this history. The hiking trail "Kyststien Snaptun-Juelsminde" runs through the forest along the coast, making the shelter site an ideal place to stay overnight during your journey. If you follow the Coastal Path for a few hundred meters, you'll arrive in the harbor town of Snaptun. From there, ferries depart for Endelave and Hjarnø, and the hiking route the Fjordmino also passes through the town.
